In just about any home, you can find plenty of wood touches. The cabinets, the flooring, decorative touches – each is made out of wood.

The question for home buyers is, How was the wood obtained? Was it a product of the destruction of tropical rain forests? Were trees planted after the wood was processed?

The Forest Stewardship Council was formed in the early 1990s after an international conference on the destruction of the rain forests in Brazil. Without countries willing to come together on an international pact on deforestation, the FSC was founded. Today, there are more than 40 countries participating in the council, which sets forth principles, criteria and standards that span economic, social and environmental concerns. The FSC standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes.
